In my other life, I do local government audits. For years we have purchased a government GAAP Guide from CCH. The price has kept ratcheting up over the years until it went over the top this year. We received the newest edition last month. In the box there was the 1-1/2 inch thick 9" by 6" book - the prize jewel of the latest and greatest in governmental accounting literature. Missing from the box was a bill. But they had a nice little 2 inch wide slip saying login to your account to pay the bill. Since we have always paid the "enclosed bill" by check, I don't have any online account to view the invoice and they didn't include any of my account information in with the package. I made the decision to wait and I'm sure they will send me a bill. Sure enough, last Monday they sent an e-mail with my account number and invoice number so now I can pay the bill. I create my account and view my bill. What the *(*^%%&^^&&^*$!!!? The obnoxiously priced book price increased 42% from last year and is now $1319. Thanks, but no thanks. I use their little chat feature and tell them thanks, but I don't want it for that price. In their response, Mr Chat informed me that I could only return it if it was damaged but the 30 day window for that had passed. So Mr Chat isn't too helpful and I couldn't find a phone number to call so I created a case through support. That was last Monday, they finally got back to me today and told me the same thing that Mr Chat said. To add insult to injury, I got an "early bird" flyer from them yesterday offering a number of publications and there is my GAAP guide ---------------- roughly $400 cheaper than what I was billed. "Early bird" flyer after I got gouged a month earlier? So today's e-mail informed me the case was closed. I reopened it and pointed out that it's hardly fair business practices to bill someone with such a huge increase without any advance notice (or even any notice with the package). I told them I would keep the book if they at least gave me the early bird price otherwise my next stop was going to be with the MN Attorney General's Office. At least Intuit tells you ahead of time that they are going to gouge you ------------ it's the American way! As a side note right after I got their e-mail a CCH survey popped up. I checked every box that I could find with a zero for their zero to 10 happiness ratings and in the comment box I did say they sucked. The last question the survey asked if they could use my survey and my name in future advertising -------- absolutely, please do.😁
Don't expect a company headquartered in The Netherlands to follow The American Way. Don't consider it a price increase, just think of it as a retaliatory tariff.
And remember -- the dollar has declined about 15% against the euro since January 20.
