Have you verified with client that it's correct? Waste of time to try previous year's PIN.
Have your clients check this out - there have been IPIN problems in the past.

Paper file
You need to use the IPPIN that was issued to the client in Jan 2024 on ANY returns that are EFiled in 2024..if youre trying to use the IPPIN that was issued in 2023, youre too late to use that, you need the most current one.
If youve double checked that the client is giving you the most recent one and theres no other people on the return that have IPPIns, you may be stuck filing by paper.
I have the same issue. THey just got a new IPIN for 2024 taxes. Tried for 2023 that kept rejecting stating they needed an IPIN. Curious there has been scams because the spouse getting the reject doesn't recall ever getting or asking for an IPIN.
IPPINs are issued for a calendar year, ANY return filed in that calendar year uses that same IPPIN.
The client should log into their IRS online account and retrieve the PIN, Ive heard theres even a new button to Opt-Out of the IPPIN program.
Thank you Lisa. They did get a 2024 Ipn after much prodding from me. I input the ipn on their 2023 return and tried to file. It rejected. I'm waiting to see what happens with their 2024 which I just filed using the same ipn.

What do you mean by 2024? Is it the one that was issued in January 2025, for all returns filed in 2025?
where do I mail a paper return if the original was rejected because of incorrect fre pin #
I suggest checking the IRS website for the correct address for mailing:
1) it depends on the state
2) it may have changed recently (the addresses for payments changed mid-summer.
Also, in Lacerte, if I remove the 'tag' indicating the return is to be e-
filed, the mailing address populated in the letter.
I would guess PS has something similar (assuming you are using PS)
I filed 2 different 2024 returns Tuesday (Oct 14, 2025), using the 2024s IPIN the clients bought in with their other tax information.
Yes, had them send me the printout. They don't even recall getting an IPN for 2023 so I've only used the IPN they just obtained online. They sent me a printout so I know it's correct.
I wish they would all opt out. Maybe that's what I should have had them do. This is painful.
They went online and got a new IPN and still neither 2024 or 2023 will process.
I also filed an individual return on 10/9 which still was not updating as received. I finally got the return to file by going to the efile menu instead of clicking on the "update" link in the home base. Maybe there is some kind of technical glitch with the IPN's?
Sorry I should have said 2025. They went online and got another IPN hot off the IRS website. They don't even recall ever applying or receiving one in 2024.

How long ago? I imagine it takes a while to filter through the system.
I thought you had to use a IPN received in the current year to file any return regardless whether it's 2023 or 2024.
They obtained the IPN on 10/13
