extension payments should automatically transfer to payments screen

KenGreenberg

There are two issues I'm seeing:

  1. Payments made with extensions - Federal and State - don't transfer to the payments screen. It's as if it never happened.

    I have to manually verify that the "Electronic payment of tax due with extension" was checked and then enter that in the payments screen.

  2. If I set up estimated quarterly taxes via account debit, these also don't automatically transfer to the payments screen.

We shouldn't have to manually confirm that estimated or extension payments were made. I missed one and accidentally told a client he owed more than he did. He asked about the extension payments he made. I double checked and found we did make payments with the extensions. As a result he owed significantly less.

Proconnect should know payments were made.

That was needlessly embarrassing.

There's no way for ProConnect to know if payments were made.  But it takes less than a minute to confirm them with the client. That's part of the preparer's job.

@BobKamman

Proconnect knows the payment was scheduled when I check the box "Electronic payment of tax due with extension" and there's bank info in the Direct Deposit screen.

Same is true for estimated payments if I set them to debit automatically. It should fill in all the payments and dates just as ProSeries used to do.

It's true that Proconnect can't know for sure if the debits actually happened, but I'd rather have a Suggestion pop up in the Check Return screen to confirm payments it carries over than have to enter them myself.

In general, I'm looking for less redundant data entry.

ProConnect doesn't know the bank account information was correct, or that there were sufficient funds in the account to cover the attempted withdrawal.  I would go along with a pop-up that asks if the extension payment was made, but that isn't going to reduce data entry.

This should work the same way as Lacerte, which is what the software is based on.  It should post the amount and date as a memo (the fields are already available) and allow the preparer to enter the actual amount paid and date paid after verification.  There should be a diagnostic (just Like Lacerte) if there is information in the memo field, but no entry in the amount paid field.

Those wishing to have the bells/whistles of Lacerte Software should be prepared to pay for those bells/whistles.

Everybody wants all sorts of features added to the various softwares but then they need to have paramedics stand by when they get the bill for the software once all of those items are added.  Just give me a software where the bugs are all worked out once the IRS opens the floodgates for the new year and I would be happy.

i used to think Lacerte was software used by very smart people working on very complicated returns.  Then I tried a demo and figured out it's for less careful people trying to avoid careless mistakes.
